the thing that’s getting me about chadwick, is how tired he must have been. how much strength it takes to be undergoing painful treatment and invasive surgery, and to still be creating art. to know you probably will not live to a ripe old age and to say “i’m creating a legacy now” and using the time you have on this earth to tell black stories, to embody a warrior and a king for black people to see themselves reflected in, to create art. that sort of strength deserved to live, it deserved to survive. it’s so incredibly unfair.

rest in power chadwick, we watched you play a hero but little did we know, the hero was you all along. wakanda forever and always king.

He has left his mark on this world and given hope and joy to sooo many people. He embodied what it means to be a warrior and a king. He is and will be deeply missed.

I don’t think people realize how much of an impact this kind of support can have, I don’t think everyone knows what these little things can mean to us.

It may just be me, I don’t know. But every single time I see this on my dash or on someone’s blog or anywhere else, I kind of just breathe a sigh of relief. That’s one more person who cares. That’s one more person who doesn’t hate me.

Because it means so much, especially when all the media is spewing out is that I’m a terrible person and no one wants people like me near them. It means so much because I’m tired of people who won’t sit next to me in class, or who choose to join the longer line at the grocery store because they don’t want to be beside me and my family. It means so much when I have to lift my head any time someone says the words Islam or Muslim because I’m scared that they’ll say something that’ll hurt, when I have to pay attention to the news because who knows what so and so is saying now, who knows which of my people are being attacked now, who knows what’s going to happen to me now.

It means so much because I’ve been given the idea that the world is against me. And a huge part of it may be, but at least I’ve been reminded that some of it, just a small group of people, acknowledges that I’m a person too. That people like me are just that, people.

Maybe it’s just me, I don’t know. But now you do, so thank you for believing that I’m human when so many people don’t.

On July 17, 2014, Eric Garner died in Staten Island, New York City, after a New York City Police Department (NYPD) officer put him in a chokehold for about 15 to 19 seconds while arresting him. NYPD policy prohibits the use of chokeholds. The officer denied choking Garner, but the New York City Medical Examinerā€™s Office report stated ā€œCause of Death: Compression of neck (choke hold), compression of chest and prone positioning during physical restraint by policeā€ and ā€œContributing Conditions: Acute and chronic bronchial asthma; Obesity; Hypertensive cardiovascular diseaseā€. In addition, the filming of the incident brought police brutality into wider public awareness.[1]

NYPD officers approached Garner on suspicion of selling single cigarettes from packs without tax stamps. After Garner told the police that he was tired of being harassed and that he was not selling cigarettes, the officers went to arrest Garner. When officer Daniel Pantaleo tried to take Garnerā€™s wrist behind his back, Garner pulled his arms away. Pantaleo then put his arm around Garnerā€™s neck and took him down onto the ground. After Pantaleo removed his arm from Garnerā€™s neck, he pushed the side of Garnerā€™s face into the ground while four officers moved to restrain Garner, who repeated ā€œI canā€™t breatheā€ eleven times while lying facedown on the sidewalk. After Garner lost consciousness, officers turned him onto his side to ease his breathing. Garner remained lying on the sidewalk for seven minutes while the officers waited for an ambulance to arrive. The officers and emergency medical technicians did not perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on Garner at the scene; according to a spokesman for the PBA, this was because they believed that Garner was breathing and that it would be improper to perform CPR on someone who was still breathing. He was pronounced dead at the hospital approximately one hour later.
